Creative Painting – Using Only One Brush

Posted on 2012/06/22 at 00:50 by daarken 26 Comments

In this video Daarken challenges you to create a sketch or a painting using only one brush. Don’t pick a typical brush like the round or chalk brush, pick something that you would never consider doing an entire painting with. The example used in this video is the chain brush.

Post your painting here!

hey daarken! i had one quick question if you dont mind answering. out of all of your video tutorials on the site which would be the best for a beginner trying to learn how to draw fantasy characters like the female hunter and the post apocalyptic character? thanks for your time!

You should probably start with the first videos I posted and go from there. You can’t start by trying to paint a fantasy character right out of the gate or else you will fail. You have to build your fundamentals first. You can’t learn to dance before you learn to walk. Yes it is boring and hard and it will take a long time, but you have to work on drawing cubes and spheres before you can start drawing people and you have to do those things for a long time before you can start doing imaginative work.

Just watch all of them, most are only 5-10 minutes each. I don’t know if there is a “best” tutorial out there, so just try and watch as many as you can. You won’t become an awesome artist just from watching one tutorial. Also, just watching tutorials won’t make you a better artist either unless you spend years practicing. Aside from the ones on my site, you can also check out, the Gnomon tutorials, and the Massive Black tutorials.

And this using one brush thing seems to be an interesting challenge. I should try.

Thanks! Unfortunately right now my schedule is completely full, so I don’t have time to work on any new videos. I might not be able to make any new ones for the next several months. From now on, I will probably only update the site whenever I have some extra free time.

Ah, I was also wondering what was going on; figured you were busy. If it’s a few months, I’d recommend making a forum post about that or something. Good luck with your work!

hey daarken this is a really weird question but i have always thought about it. is a better drawing technique to rest your wrist on the tablet when drawing or to only have your pen nib touching?
    thanks in advance!

Daarken, I am really really glad that it is all about being busy, because I was starting to worry. I was thinking there was something wrong. But I am so happy now that it’s just you have being busy. So just take your time, because I am sure that like me, everybody will be just right here waiting for your next wonderful and productive tutorials.

Hey there! HUGE FAN by the way, question for your expertise that has been driving me nuts! There is an artist called Stjepan Sejic that does a brush the overlaps but does NOT bleed thru, it goes off of the same theory as the chain brush you use. But I space the brush in options and it will NOT do a seperate effect it bleeds together, think a dragon scale or triangle where it would overlap on the point, any help would be appreciated! Hope you continue your awesome art. thanks again,

I created my own keyboard shortcut to flip the canvas. Just go to edit – keyboard shortcuts. Mine is set to ctrl+f.
